The last bastion

It stood outside, displaying remarkable patience and calm for its kind. I guess people would call me insane, but I swear it looked almost…almost cute. It wagged its tail lazily with no apparent pattern to it, looking almost bored. The left horn was slightly longer than its right, giving it a lopsided, constantly quizzical look that added to its appeal.

Its eyes searched for something as it stared at the building, almost as if it was waiting for me to step outside and meet it. But then, I suppose it was. As a passing thought, I wondered why it didn’t come inside. After all, everywhere else it’s kind entered freely at will. But then, I guess, we weren’t an ordinary church – we were The Church – the centre of all religious activities in the world. I guess God lived here after all. But he sure was losing it this time! For all my lifelong religiosity, I was a pragmatic guy and knew I had to be on the winning side. The promise of money and women in the afterlife certainly helped.

Our eyes met and I nodded to it. It acknowledged me and slowly raised its pitchfork towards me, perhaps asking me to get on with my work. A strange calm washed over me as I turned around to do what I had to do. I heard the choir sing as I took off my papal ring. Strange how I hadn’t appreciated the beauty and serenity of the music before. Oh well, it’s all over now I thought to myself as I set world’s last church on fire, for we are all truly in hell now.
